For Under the Radar’s 13th annual Artist Survey we emailed some of our favorite artists a few questions relating to We asked them about their favorite albums of the year and their thoughts on various notable news stories involving either the music industry or world events, as well as some quirkier personal questions. Here are some answers from Sierra Casady of CocoRosie. CocoRosie’s latest album, Heartache City , is out now. We have never been great music listeners and certainly do not keep up on the latest. Not knowing what’s in is sometimes better for the creative mind. What was the highlight of , for either you personally or for the band?

Place the Shine On is because of out March 13 and is available for preorder. Sierra Casady: Tunes video clips are not an easy feat, they can be so challenging, to test to fit a image to the sound, it can be nearly extremely hard. I feel we required to have some pleasurable and commit time on skates and just goof off a minor bit, and make something that was type of like a house online video feel, down residence, just a worn-out blue denims vibe, to meet up with this tune, which has a minimal bit of a unhappy story.

Self-produced, La Maison… is an eerie, sparse, haunted record; instrumentation that sounds like field recordings, or sounds transferred from well-worn 78s, threaded around unfussy synthetic clicks and glitchy backing and delicate harp runs, lovely as unexpected pools of sunlight.

Then there are the voices:a lilting, jazzy rasp very Karen Dalton , oddly child-like sighs, a soaring but never overbearing operatic trill, like the return of an echo. CocoRosie have been touring Europe this year. CocoRosie , the sister duo made up of Bianca and Sierra Casady, seem to defy all musical labels. Freak folk? Eerily ethereal? Odd and rowdily changeable? They also consistently polarise critics.

Originally a duo , the group was formed when Bianca, who was living in New York City at the time, made an impromptu visit to Sierra at her Paris apartment, reconnecting with her for the first time in ten years. They later expanded to a group and added various backing musicians , including a bassist , keyboardist , beatboxer , and synth player. Their childhood has been described as “bizarre” and “nomadic”. In a interview, Bianca described their childhood, stating “we spent our summers hiking from reservation to reservation I remember being in peyote circles as a kid, sitting in tepees full of smoke We always felt pretty much like freaks, but we felt good about it.

In the space of four years and two albums, CocoRosie have carved out their own little niche in the world of alternative music. Their kooky folk, which blends opera singing, the sound of children’s toys and scratchy hip-hop beats with scabrous fairy-tale lyrics, has won them a wealth of fans. They are friends with Devendra Banhart and Antony Hegarty of the Johnsons , and have collaborated with both of them.

CocoRosie are not like other bands. To break the routine of sterile hotel interviews in the middle of a three-week European press tour, it was suggested that they might like to have dinner somewhere instead. And so, that evening, never having met or even spoken to them before, the Casady sisters turn up for dinner chez journaliste.

The elder of the pair by two years, she has long, black, raven hair and a shooting star drawn on her cheek. Bianca, blonde, angelic-faced and dressed in baggy “street” attire, sports a DIY haircut. While I’m slaving over the schnitzel, the sisters make themselves completely comfortable in another room, entertaining each other.

CocoRosie is forever waiting for its moment to arrive. Over the years, CocoRosie slowly drifted away from their lo-fi roots and toward sounds that emphasize the sophistication of their songs. On Tales of a GrassWidow, Sierra and Bianca Casady polish away some of the more grating edges of their previous album, Grey Oceans, but these songs aren’t all sweetness and light: “After the Afterlife” begins the album with deceptive delicacy before synths take the track in a darker and more mysterious direction.

CocoRosie have long divided opinion — and, love them or loathe them, much of that opinion rests on what you think of their vocals. The Casady sisters are back to divide opinion and elicit a wide range of facial expressions with their first album since ‘s Grey Oceans, Tales of a GrassWidow. Firstly, let’s address most critics’ main gripe with CocoRosie and talk about the vocals. They’re odd and wildly changeable; one minute toddler, the next shrill belter, the next angelic chorister.

Like many of our past records, we wrote and gathered much of the material at our farm studio in the south of France with minimal equipment, vintage toys and antique instruments. Going back to a ‘4-track’ style approach, we limited ourselves to essential, acoustic accompaniment, played by us, and select percussion, toys from our old suit cases dating back to the “La Maison” days.

In the nearly five years since CocoRosie released their last album, sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady have been far from idle. It was a really beautiful place, but at the same time kind of brutal. We were making music, but also dealing with a lot of complicated stuff within our family, mental illness and alcoholism, which eventually started to weave in and out of the record thematically.

There is such a taboo about mental illness, it felt important to talk about that in a really honest way. These stories about our family, about life and death and illness, were intertwined with a Wu-Tang-like way of mythologizing things. The whole record, and how and where and why it got made, became a wild journey of its own.

I was introduced to CocoRosie nearly ten years ago. Their music includes elements of opera, hip-hop, and electronica. We came close a few times. At one point, after an initial positive response from their management, our then-artistic director told me that all tour plans were on hold because the sisters were allegedly in a Parisian jail.

Years later and in partnership with the Walker, we finally secured a date, and my dream of CocoRosie at The Cedar came to fruition. The performance was dynamic and multifaceted and included costume changes, set designs, choreographed stage lighting, and a video backdrop. The stage was set up like a dressing room and included a vanity with a mirror in front of a clothesline that had random apparel hanging from it. The music was beautiful. The live performance provided a combination of beat boxing, opera, and pop.

Later in the show, he performed an amazing solo that highlighted his contributions to the overall sound and made his work stand out that much more for the remainder of the performance. Rather, the music — and the entire performance — was beautiful, haunting, and oddly accessible for such a bizarrely different artistic approach.

Heartache City , Bianca and Sierra Casady’s sixth album as CocoRosie, intentionally upends the sonic trajectory the band appeared to be following. On ‘s Grey Oceans and ‘s Tales of a GrassWidow production grew increasingly layered and prismatic. On that record the sisters worked with minimal effects and in maximum seclusion. Heartache City isn’t completely stripped bare, but it is a case of stylistic ideas coming full circle, or maybe full spiral.

An example of stepping back as a way to advance. On La maison and the two albums that followed, CocoRosie’s auditory and semiotic mashups confused and upset people. Time has softened some of the criticism. Or, more likely, the Casadys have held a singular worldview long enough earn respect from those who first viewed the project as a trifle.

In a calmly unfolding voice, quite different than her house of mirrors vocal style, Bianca shared thoughts on the new album and the band’s conflicted reputation. Not really. I’ve actually been doing it all these years. My sister’s not that talkative, actually. So I’ve kind of gotten used to representing the two of us.
